Wurtsboro, NY — a restored 19th‑century church retreat

Step inside a beautifully re‑imagined 1823 church retreat where history meets quiet luxury. Designed and restored by architect Matthew Bremer of Architecture in Formation, Phillipsport Church House invites long weekends of slow mornings, lively dinners, and lazy afternoons beside the fire orb — all wrapped in soaring, sun‑washed spaces that feel both sacred and welcoming.

The story of the space

Nearly two centuries old, this former rural church stood silent until Matt saw its potential — a timeless sanctuary just waiting to be lived in. With deep respect for its original simplicity, he preserved the expansive sanctuary’s light‑filled openness, original details, and lofty proportions while layering in modern comfort and thoughtful design. What was once pews and pulpit is now curated living: a chef’s kitchen, generous lounge, dining under soaring ceilings, and plenty of room to gather.

Downstairs, the former basement — once Sunday School and fellowship hall — is now serene sleeping quarters: cozy bedrooms tucked into the foundation’s gentle glow, a perfect counterpoint to the open sanctuary above.

Why Locèlle loves it

  • A true Catskills original. From its 1823 bones to the moments of modern whimsy, this isn’t just a stay — it’s a story you live in.
  • Sacred spaces made for gathering. The open sanctuary feels like home — perfect for reconnecting with friends, family, your partner, or even your own creative rhythm.
  • Quiet luxury with heart. Rustle‑free linens, a chef’s kitchen, sunlit gathering spaces, and a fire‑lit lounge strike the perfect balance between comfort and unforgettable moments.
  • Nature just outside your door. Quiet lanes, forested walks, and the nearby Catskills and Shawangunk Ridge make this retreat ideal for hikers, explorers, and slow‑paced wanderers alike.

Who it for

This is a home for those who want more than just a place to sleep — it’s for the people who cherish design with depth, history with intention, and stays that feel like visiting a dear friend’s most treasured getaway.
